Sesame oil is an edible vegetable oil derived from sesame seeds. Besides being used as a cooking oil, it is used as a flavor enhancer in many cuisines, having a distinctive nutty aroma and taste. In Ayurvedic medicine, sesame oil (til tel) is used for massaging as it is believed to rid the body of heat due to its viscous nature upon rubbing. It is also used locally in soaps, paints, lubricants, and illuminants.
Sesame Oil USP NF Grade Specifications:
DEFINITION
Sesame Oil is the refined fixed oil obtained from the seed of one or more cultivated varieties of Sesamum indicum L. (Fam. Pedaliaceae). It may contain suitable antioxidants.
IDENTIFICATION
A. Identity by Triglyceride Profile: To pass the test.
ASSAY
Triglyceride Composition: To pass the test.
Alkaline Impurities:
Sample: 10 mL of Sesame Oil
Analysis: Mix 10 mL of freshly opened acetone and 0.3 mL of water, and add 0.05 mL of bromophenol blue TS. Add the Sample, shake, and allow to stand. Titrate with 0.01 N hydrochloric acid VS to change the color of the upper layer to yellow.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 0.1 mL of 0.01 N hydrochloric acid is required.

Refined Sesame Oil BP Ph Eur Grade Specifications:
DEFINITION
Fatty oil obtained from the ripe seeds of Sesamum indicum L. by expression or extraction. It is then refined. Improved colour and odour may be obtained by further refining. It may contain a suitable antioxidant.
CHARACTERS
Appearance: Clear, light yellow liquid, almost colourless.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent), miscible with light petroleum.
Relative density: About 0.919.
Refractive index: About 1.473.
It solidifies to a butter-like mass at about -4C.
