Iodoform

Iodoform is the organoiodine compound with the formula CHI3. A pale yellow, crystalline, volatile substance, it has a penetrating and distinctive odor sometimes referred to as the smell of hospitals, sweetish taste. It is occasionally used as a disinfectant.

Iodoform USP Grade
or Triiodomethane
CHI3 393.73 [75-47-8].

Iodoform, previously dried over silica gel for 24 hours, contains not less than 99.0 percent and not more than 100.5 percent of CHI3.
Packaging and storage: Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers, store at controlled room temperature, and prevent exposure to excessive heat.

Identification: Heat 0.1 g: a purple gas is evolved.
Loss on drying: Dry it over silica gel for 24 hours: it loses not more than 0.5% of its weight.
Residue on ignition: not more than 0.1%.
Coloring matter, acids, and alkalies: Shake about 2 g of it with 5 mL of water for 1 minute, and filter: the filtrate is colorless and is neutral to litmus.
Chloride: Shake 3.0 g of powdered Iodoform with 75 mL of water for 1 minute, allow to stand, and filter the supernatant. To 25 mL of the filtrate add 6 mL of 3 N nitric acid, and dilute with water to 40 mL. This solution shows no more chloride than corresponds to 0.15 mL of 0.020 N hydrochloric acid (0.011%).
Sulfate: To 25 mL of the filtrate obtained in the test for Chloride add 1 mL of 3 N hydrochloric acid, and dilute with water to 40 mL. This solution shows no more sulfate than corresponds to 0.17 mL of 0.020 N sulfuric acid (0.017%).
Assay: Transfer about 200 mg of Iodoform, previously dried over silica gel for 24 hours and accurately weighed, to a 500-mL glass-stoppered conical flask. Add 20 mL of alcohol, and swirl to dissolve. Add 30.0 mL of 0.1 N silver nitrate and 10 mL of nitric acid, insert the stopper, and allow it to stand in a dark place for 16 hours. Add 150 mL of water and 5 mL of ferric ammonium sulfate and titrate the excess silver nitrate with 0.1 N ammonium thiocyanate. Perform a blank determination. Each mL of 0.1 N silver nitrate is equivalent to 13.124 mg of CHI3.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Airborne Exposure Limits: USA ACGIH TWA: 0.6 ppm or 10 mg/m3
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator may be worn. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.
