Cetomacrogol 1000 is the tradename for polyethylene glycol hexadecyl ether, which is nonionic surfactant produced by the ethoxylation of cetyl alcohol to give a material with the general formula HO(C2H4O)nC16H33. Several grades of this material are available depending of the level of ethoxylation performed, with repeat units (n) of polyethylene glycol varying between 2 and 20 and n = about 20 is a favored grade. It is used as a solubilizer and emulsifying agent in foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, often as an ointment base, and also as a research tool. It is used as O/W emulsifier for creams/lotions.

Appearance: White/cream waxy pastilles.
Description: A cream-coloured, waxy, unctuous mass, pellets, or flakes; when heated, it melts to a brownish yellow, clear liquid; odorless or almost odorless.
Solubility: Soluble in water, ethanol (~750 g/l), and acetone; practically insoluble in light petroleum.
Melting point: Not lower than 38C.
Acid value: Not more than 0.5.
Alkalinity: Dissolve 2 g in 20 mL of carbon-dioxide-free water, add 1 drop of phenolphthalein/ethanol, and titrate with hydrochloric acid (0.1 mol/l); not more than 0.5 mL is required to obtain a pink colour.
Hydroxyl value: Use 10 g,
Saponification value: Use 10 g; not more than 1.
Water: not more than 10 mg/g.

Characteristics
A white or almost white, waxy solid or flakes melting when heated to a clear almost colourless liquid.
Practically insoluble in water, producing an emulsion; moderately soluble in ethanol (96%); partly soluble in ether.

Identification
A. Incinerate at a temperature not exceeding 450C until free from carbon and cool. The residue is negligible (distinction from Emulsifying Wax).
B. Complies with the test for Sulfated ash.

Tests
Acid value: Not more than 0.5.
Refractive index: At 60C, 1.435 to 1.439
Solidifying point: 45C to 53C, using the following modifications. Place in the inner test tube sufficient of the melted substance to fill the tube to a depth of about 50 mm. Stir the substance gently and steadily, without scraping the wall of the tube, while the tube and its contents are allowed to cool. The temperature at which the level of the mercury in the thermometer remains stationary for a short time is regarded as the solidifying point.
Alkalinity: Dissolve 10 g in 10 mL of water and 10 mL of ethanol (96%). Not more than 0.5 mL of 0.1m hydrochloric acid is required for neutralisation using phenolphthalein solution as indicator.
Hydroxyl value: 175 to 192. Use 3.5 g.
Saponification value: Not more than 2.0. Use 20 g.
Sulfated ash: Not more than 0.1%,

Due to its composition, it combines the properties of the low-viscosity, volatile cyclopentasiloxane and the extremely high-viscosity dimethiconol. The excellent spreading of cyclopentasiloxane allows a good distribution of the high-viscosity conditioning agent dimethiconol. It is used in Skin care, hair care, make-up, shaving, deodorants, conditioner, hairstyle and other cosmetic products.
