White & Yellow Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly or petrolatum or white petrolatum or soft paraffin or multi-hydrocarbon, is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons, originally promoted as a topical ointment for its healing properties. Petroleum jelly’s benefits come from its main ingredient petroleum, which helps seal your skin with a water-protective barrier. It is recognized by the U.S. A. Food and Drug Administration as an approved over-the-counter (OTC) skin protectant and remains widely used in cosmetic skin care. Most uses of petroleum jelly exploit its lubricating and coating properties, including use on dry lips and dry skin.

Specifications of White Petrolatum USP & NF Grade:

DEFINITION
White Petrolatum is a purified mixture of semisolid hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum, and wholly or nearly decolorized. It may contain a suitable stabilizer.

Residue on Ignition:
Sample: 2 g
Analysis: Heat the Sample in an open porcelain or platinum dish over a flame.
Acceptance criteria: It volatilizes without emitting an acrid odor and yields NMT 0.05% of residue.
Procedure: Organic Acids:
Sample solution: 20.0 g of White Petrolatum in 100 mL of a 1 in 2 mixture of neutralized alcohol and water. Agitate thoroughly and heat to boiling.
Analysis: Add 1 mL of phenolphthalein and titrate rapidly with 0.1 N sodium hydroxide, with vigorous agitation to the production of a sharp pink endpoint, noting the color change in the alcohol–water layer.
Acceptance criteria: NMT 400 microL of 0.1 N sodium hydroxide is required.
Color: To pass the test.
Specific Gravity: 0.815–0.880 at 60C
Melting Range or Temperature:38C –60C
Consistency: To pass the test.
Alkalinity:
Sample: 35 g
Analysis: Introduce the Sample into a suitable beaker, add 100 mL of boiling water, cover, and place on a stirring hot-plate maintained at the boiling point of water. After 5 min, allow the phases to separate. Draw off the separated water into a casserole, wash the petrolatum further with two 50-mL portions of boiling water, and add the washings to the casserole. To the pooled washings, add 1 drop of phenolphthalein, and boil.
Acceptance criteria: The solution does not acquire a pink color.
Acidity:
Sample: Final solution of the test for Alkalinity, if the addition of phenolphthalein produced no pink color
Analysis: To the Sample, add 0.1 mL of methyl orange.
Acceptance criteria: No red or pink color is produced.
Fixed Oils, Fats, and Rosin:
Sample: 10 g
Analysis: Digest the Sample with 50 mL of 5 N sodium hydroxide at 100° for 30 min. Separate the water layer, and acidify it with 5 N sulfuric acid.
Acceptance criteria: No oily or solid matter separates.
Packaging and Storage: Preserve in well-closed containers.
Labeling: Label it to indicate the name and proportion of any added stabilizer.

Always seek medical advice after the first aid treatment.

Skin: Rinse with water. Soap may be used. Seek Medical Aid.
Eyes: Wash eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lids occasionally. Seek Medical Aid.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Ingestion: If swallowed, induce vomiting immediately after giving two glasses of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Treatment: Treat symptomatically.

Section 5: Fire and Explosion Data

Products of Combustion: Oxides of carbon and toxic fumes.
Fire Fighting Media and Instructions: Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighting if necessary.
General: Combustible at high temperature.
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. At high temperatures under fire conditions, it may produce toxic or irritating fumes. Fire-extinguishing work is done from the windward and the suitable fire-extinguishing method according to the surrounding situation is used. Uninvolved persons should evacuate to a safe place.

Section 6: Accidental Release Measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures: Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Restrict unprotected personnel from the area. Prevent any contact with hot surfaces. Do not approach facing the wind. Do not touch the spilled material.
Environmental precautions: Do not let the product enter drains, soil or water sources.
Methods and materials used for containment Cleanup procedures and Storage:
Small Spill: Use appropriate tools to put the spilled solid in a convenient waste disposal container. Finish cleaning by spreading water on the contaminated surface and dispose of according to legal requirements.
Large Spill: Contain spilled material. Do not inhale dust, vapors, mist, or gas. Avoid dust formation. Cover with inert material and use a shovel to put the material into a convenient waste disposal container. Finish cleaning by spreading water on the contaminated surface and allow to evacuate as per law.

Section 7: Handling and Storage

Precautions for safe handling: Apply according to good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices. Ensure proper ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not drink, eat or smoke while handling. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Minimize dust generation. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Prevent any contact with hot surfaces.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in cool, dry and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep air contact to a minimum. Do not leave the material container open. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust/mist/vapor. Do not store with incompatible materials like oxidizing agents.

Section 8: Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Exposure Guidelines: This product does not contain any hazardous materials with occupational exposure limits established by the region-specific regulatory bodies.
Engineering Controls: Use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to keep airborne levels below recommended exposure limits. If user operations generate dust, fume or mist, use ventilation to keep exposure to airborne contaminants below the exposure limit.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator may be worn. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.
