DEFINITION
Cottonseed Oil is the refined fixed oil obtained from the seed of cultivated plants of various varieties of Gossypium hirsutum L. or of other species of Gossypium (Fam. Malvaceae). It may contain suitable antioxidants.

Analysis: Mix 10 mL of acetone and 0.3 mL of water and add 0.05 mL of bromophenol blue TS. If necessary, neutralize the solution to a green color with 0.01 N hydrochloric acid or 0.01 N sodium hydroxide. Add the Sample, shake, and allow to stand. Titrate with 0.01 N hydrochloric acid to change the color of the upper layer to yellow.

DESCRIPTION
Cottonseed Oil (Unhydrogenated) occurs as a dark red-brown oil. It is obtained from the seed of the cotton plant Gossypium hirsutum (American) or Gossypium barbadense (Egyptian) by mechanical expression or solvent extraction. It is refined, bleached, and deodorized to substantially remove free fatty acids, phospholipids, color, odor and flavor components, and miscellaneous other non-oil materials. It is liquid at 21C to 27C,clouds at 21C, and partially solidifies at storage temperatures below 10C to 16C. It is free from visible foreign material at 23C to 27C.
Function: Cooking or salad oil; component of margarine or shortening; tenderizer; carrier; stabilizer; thickener; coating agent; texturizer.
