Di-tert-butyl peroxide or DTBP or Tert-Butyl peroxide is an organic compound consisting of a peroxide group bonded to two tert-butyl groups. It is one of the most stable organic peroxides. Di-Tert-Butyl Peroxide or DTBP is used to as a catalyst of polymerization for olefin copolymers and cross linking agent for unsaturated polyesters. It is also used as a fuel additive and chemical intermediate. It is a strong free radical source containing more than 10.9% of active oxygen. It decomposes rapidly, causing fire and explosion hazard, on heating and under influence of light. Highly flammable. Refrigerate.

3. Composition/Information on Ingredients

Product Name & Other Names: Di-Tert-Butyl Peroxide or DTBP or Tert-Butyl peroxide
CAS No.: 110-05-4
EINECS EC Number: 203-733-6

4. First Aid Measures

Always seek medical attention after first aid measures are provided.

Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical attention immediately.
Ingestion: If swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give large quantities of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention immediately.
Skin Contact: Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention immediately. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse.
Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately.
Note to physicians: Treat symptomatically.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Flammability of the Product: Flammable.
Auto-Ignition Temperature: SADT: 110C literature.
Flash Points: 6C lowest reported.
Products of Combustion: Carbon dioxide, Carbon monoxide, fumes.
Explosion: Explosive in presence of heat.
Fire Extinguishing Media: Use Water spray, Carbon dioxide (CO2), Foam, Dry powder and Sand for extinction. Flammable liquid and vapor. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel to a source of ignition and flash back. Vapors can spread along the ground and collect in low or confined areas. Never direct a water jet in the container to prevent any splashing of the product which could cause spreading of the fire. Cool containing vessels with water jet in order to prevent pressure build-up, auto-ignition or explosion.
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. At high temperatures under fire conditions, it may produce toxic or irritating fumes.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment, environmental  precautions and emergency procedures: Ventilate area of leak or spill. Keep unnecessary and unprotected people away from area of spill. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment. Avoid release to the environment. Avoid breathing vapors, mist, or gas. Beware of vapors accumulating to form explosive concentrations. Vapors can accumulate in low areas. Do not let product enter drains.
Methods and materials used for containment Cleanup procedures and Storage: Pick up or absorb and place in a suitable container for reclamation or disposal, using a method that does not generate dust or mist. Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so.

7. Handling and Storage

Precautions for safe handling: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of vapor or mist. Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking. Take measures to prevent the buildup of electrostatic charge. Store in cool place.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Keep air contact to a minimum. Store in cold, dry, and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep in a well closed container stored under cold conditions, 2C to 8C. Protect it against physical damage. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Containers may be hazardous when empty since they retain product residues; observe all warnings and precautions listed for the product. Keep container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Contact with incompatible substances can cause decomposition. Do not store with incompatible materials like strong oxidizing agents, strong reducing agents, powdered metals, strong bases, heavy metals, and heavy metal salts.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Airborne Exposure Limits: Not listed. Keep it low. Use exhaust ventilation.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures below the Airborne Exposure Limits. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area. Please refer to the ACGIH document, Industrial Ventilation, A Manual of Recommended Practices, most recent edition, for details.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): If the exposure limit is exceeded, a full face piece respirator with dust/mist filter may be worn up to 50 times the exposure limit or the maximum use concentration specified by the appropriate regulatory agency or respirator supplier, whichever is lowest. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face piece positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator. WARNING: Air purifying respirators do not protect workers in oxygen-deficient atmospheres.
Skin Protection: Wear impervious protective clothing, including boots, gloves, lab coat, apron or coveralls, as appropriate, to prevent skin contact.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.
