Magnesium Peroxide BP Ph Eur Grade Specifications
Ph Eur

DEFINITION
Mixture of magnesium peroxide and magnesium oxide.
Content: 22.0 per cent to 28.0 per cent of MgO2.

CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or slightly yellow, amorphous, light powder.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water and in ethanol (96 per cent). It dissolves in dilute  mineral acids.

IDENTIFICATION
A. Dissolve about 15 mg in 2 mL of dilute nitric acid and neutralise with dilute sodium hydroxide solution. The solution gives the reaction of magnesium.
B. Dissolve 0.1 g in 2 mL of dilute sulfuric acid and dilute to 10 mL with water. Shake 1 mL of this solution with 5 mL of ether and 0.5 mL of potassium dichromate solution. The ether layer is blue.

TESTS
Solution S1: Dissolve cautiously 5.0 g in 40 mL of hydrochloric acid. Cautiously evaporate the solution to 10 mL and dilute to 100 mL with a mixture of equal volumes of acetic acid and distilled water. Filter, if necessary, through a previously ignited and tared  porcelain or silica filter crucible of suitable porosity to give a clear filtrate. Keep the residue for the test for acid insoluble substances.
Solution S2: Dilute 5 mL of solution S1 to 25 mL with distilled water R.
Appearance of solution: Solution S1 is not more intensely coloured than reference solution.
Acidity or alkalinity: To 2.0 g add 100 mL of carbon dioxide-free water and heat to boiling for 5 min.  Filter whilst hot through a sintered-glass filter, allow to cool and dilute to  100 mL with carbon dioxide-free water. To 15 mL of the filtrate, add 0.1 mL of  phenolphthalein solution. The solution is red. Not more than 0.2 mL of 0.1 M  hydrochloric acid is necessary to change the colour of the indicator. Keep the filtrate for the test for soluble substances.
Acid insoluble substances: Maximum 0.1 per cent.
Soluble substances: Maximum 1.5 per cent.
Chlorides: Maximum 0.1 per cent.
Sulfates: Maximum 0.5 per cent.
Arsenic: Maximum 4 ppm, determined on 5 mL of solution S1.
Calcium: Maximum 1.0 per cent.
Iron: Maximum 500 ppm.
Heavy metals: Maximum 30 ppm.

ASSAY
Dissolve 80.0 mg, shaking cautiously, in a mixture, previously cooled to 20C, of 10  mL of sulfuric acid and 90 mL of water. Titrate with 0.02 M potassium permanganate until a pink colour is obtained.
1 mL of 0.02 M potassium permanganate is equivalent to 2.815 mg of MgO2.

Ingestion: Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention.
Skin Contact: Wipe off excess material from skin then immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse.
Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally. Get medical attention immediately.
Note to Physician: Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.

5. Fire Fighting Measures

Flammability of the Product: Non-flammable but it is an oxidizer.
Products of Combustion: It emits oxides of magnesium.
Fire: It is supporting fire as an oxidizer.
Explosion: Contact with oxidizable substances may cause explosion.
Fire Extinguishing Media: Water spray, foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Use means suitable for extinguishing surrounding fire. Water should be preferred.
Special Information: It is an oxidizer. In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. At high temperatures under fire conditions, it may produce toxic or irritating fumes. Fire-extinguishing work is done from the windward and the suitable fire-extinguishing method according to the surrounding situation is used. Uninvolved persons should evacuate to a safe place.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment, and emergency procedures: Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Restrict unprotected personnel from the area. Prevent any contact with hot surfaces. Do not approach facing the wind. Do not touch the spilled material.
Environmental precautions: Do not let the product enter drains, soil, or water sources.
Methods and materials used for containment Cleanup procedures and Storage:
Small Spill: Eliminate all sources of ignition. Avoid dust formation. Avoid breathing dust. Ensure adequate ventilation. Use appropriate tools to put the spilled solid in a convenient waste disposal container. Finish cleaning by spreading water on the contaminated surface and dispose of according to local and regional authority requirements.
Large Spill: Eliminate all sources of ignition. Contain spilled material. Do not let the product enter drains. Use a shovel to put the material into a convenient waste disposal container. Finish cleaning by spreading water on the contaminated surface and allow evacuating through the sanitary system if local laws permit.

7. Handling and Storage

Precautions for safe handling: Apply according to good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices. Ensure proper ventilation. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not drink, eat, or smoke while handling. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Minimize dust generation. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc.). Prevent any contact with hot surfaces.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in cool, dry, and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep air contact to a minimum. Do not leave the material container open. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust/mist/vapor. Do not store with incompatible materials like organic substances, reducing agents, acids, powdered metals, strong bases, alcohols, phosphorous, anhydrides, halogens. Protect against physical damage heat or combustible substances.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Airborne Exposure Limits: None established.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator may be worn. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.
