Polyquaternium is a neologism used to emphasize the presence of quaternary ammonium centers in the polymer. Different polymers are distinguished by the numerical value that follows the word "polyquaternium". Polyquaterniums find particular application in conditioners, shampoo, hair mousse, hair spray, hair dye, personal lubricant, and contact lens solutions. Of significant importance is Polyquaternium-7 Copolymer of acrylamide and diallyldimethylammonium chloride and Polyquaternium-10 Quaternized hydroxyethyl cellulose.
Polyquaternium-1 is an antimicrobial preservative used for rabbit ocular surface study.

Polyquaternium-7 is used as modifier in shampoo, hair conditioner, hair spray, mousse, soap, gel, styling agent, shaving product, deodorant, and antiperspirant. It has CAS number 26590-05-6.
