L-Tryptophan or (S)-2-Amino-3-(3-indolyl)propionic acid or L-α-Amino-3-indolepropionic acid is an amino acid, a protein building block. Procedure:
Sample solution: Place 200 mg of Tryptophan in a 125-mL flask. Dissolve in a mixture of 3 mL of formic acid and 50 mL of glacial acetic acid.
Analysis: Titrate with 0.1 N perchloric acid, determining the endpoint potentiometrically. Perform a blank determination and make any necessary correction. Each mL of 0.1 N perchloric acid is equivalent to 20.42 mg of C11H12N2O2.
Acceptance criteria: 98.5%–101.5% on the dried basis.

CHARACTERS
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline or amorphous powder.
Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol (96 per cent). It dissolves in dilute solutions of mineral acids and alkali hydroxides.
