Cinnamic Acid

Cinnamic acid is a monocarboxylic acid with the formula C6H5CH=CHCOOH. It is a white crystalline compound that is slightly soluble in water, and freely soluble in many organic solvents. Cinnamic acid is used in flavorings, synthetic indigo, and certain pharmaceuticals. Its major use is to produce its methyl, ethyl, and benzyl esters. These esters are important components of perfumes. The acid is also a precursor to the sweetener aspartame.

General Properties and Cinnamic Acid or Trans- Cinnamic Acid or trans-3-Phenylacrylic acid:
Appearance: White monoclinic crystals.

DEFINITION
Cinnamic Acid is (E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoic acid. It contains not less than 99.0% and not more than 100.5% of C9H8O2, calculated with reference to the dried substance.

CHARACTERISTICS
Colourless crystals.
Very slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in ethanol (96%); soluble in ether.

IDENTIFICATION
A. The infrared absorption spectrum, Appendix II A, is concordant with the reference spectrum of cinnamic acid.
B. The light absorption in the range 230 to 350 nm of a 0.0010% w/v solution in 0.1M sodium hydroxide exhibits a maximum only at 267 nm. The absorbance at 267 nm is about 1.4.

TESTS
Melting point: 132C to 134C.
Ethanol-insoluble matter: A 10% w/v solution in ethanol (96%) is clear.
Related substances: To pass the test by chromatography.
Loss on drying: When dried to constant weight at 60C at a pressure not exceeding 0.7 kPa, loses not more than 1.0% of its weight. Use 1 g.
Sulfated ash: Not more than 0.1%.

ASSAY
Dissolve 0.5 g in 15 mL of ethanol (96%) previously neutralised to phenol red solution and titrate with 0.1M sodium hydroxide using phenol red solution as indicator. Each mL of 0.1M sodium hydroxide is equivalent to 14.82 mg of C9H8O2.

5. FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture: Combustible. Risk of dust explosion. Vapors are heavier than air and may spread along floors. Forms explosive mixtures with air on intense heating. Development of hazardous combustion gases or vapors possible in the event of fire.
Extinguishing Media Recommended
: CO2, foam, dry chemicals, water spray.
Non-Recommended: Avoid direct water jet on burning material.
Extinguishing Procedure: Closed containers may build up pressure at elevated temperatures. If possible, containers should be cooled with a water spray.
Hazardous Combustion Products: Carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon dioxide (CO2).
Special Information: In the event of a fire, wear full protective clothing and NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece operated in the pressure demand or other positive pressure mode. At high temperatures under fire conditions, it may produce toxic or irritating fumes.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Personal precautions, protective equipment, and emergency procedures: Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc). Restrict unprotected personnel from the area. Prevent any contact with hot surfaces. Do not approach facing the wind. Do not touch the spilled material.
Environmental precautions: Do not let the product enter drains, soil, or water sources.
Methods and materials used for containment Cleanup procedures and Storage: Contain spilled material. Cover with an inert, non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite). Vacuum or sweep up and remove to an approved disposal container. Avoid open flames or other sources of ignition.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Precautions for safe handling: Apply according to good manufacturing and industrial hygiene practices. Ensure proper ventilation. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not drink, eat, or smoke while handling. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing. Minimize dust generation. Avoid breathing dust/fumes/gas/mist/vapors/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Use individual protective equipment (waterproof boots, suitable protective clothing, safety glasses, etc). Prevent any contact with hot surfaces.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities: Store in cool, dry, and ventilated area away from heat sources and protected from sunlight in tightly closed original container. Keep air contact to a minimum. Do not leave the material container open. Store protected from heat, sparks and ignition sources and incompatible materials. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust/mist/vapor. Do not store with incompatible materials like strong oxidizing agents.
Fire Protection: Keep away from ignition sources and naked flame.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROL

Exposure Guidelines: This product does not contain any hazardous materials with occupational exposure limits established by the region-specific regulatory bodies.
Ventilation System: A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.
Personal Respirators (NIOSH Approved): For conditions of use where exposure to dust or mist is apparent and engineering controls are not feasible, a particulate respirator may be worn. For emergencies or instances where the exposure levels are not known, use a full-face positive-pressure, air-supplied respirator.
Skin Protection: Wear protective gloves and clean body-covering clothing.
Eye Protection: Use chemical safety goggles and/or full face shield where dusting or splashing of solutions is possible. Maintain eye wash fountain and quick-drench facilities in work area.
Other Control Measures: Maintain good housekeeping in work area. Dust deposits on floors and other surfaces may pick up moisture and cause the surfaces to become slippery and present safety hazards. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Wash hands after handling.
