Calcium Chloride Brine Calcium Chloride Solution
Calcium Chloride and glycol have been successfully used over the years and there are applications where both secondary coolants have an advantage. To a much lesser degree other heat transfer mediums such as methyl alcohol and sodium chloride have also been utilized.
In regards to energy efficiency, Calcium Chloride is the better choice. Its heat transfer coefficient is much better than glycol. This fact equates to smaller, less expensive chillers for the same heat transfer. The heat transfer in the floor piping system is also better. Due to the superior heat transfer characteristics, the brine pump can be smaller and the required pump horsepower and corresponding energy consumption is reduced with calcium chloride.
A Brine may be defined as liquid of low freezing point used in transmission of refrigeration without change of state. The brines commonly employed in refrigeration are Calcium Chloride and Sodium Chloride. Sodium Chloride is cheaper but cannot be used below minus 15C. Calcium Chloride of commercial grade can operate satisfactorily up to minus 40C or minus 40F. Use of Calcium Chloride above 33% should be avoided as it results in crystallization resulting in reduced efficiency. The material selected should be adjusted to pH of around 8 and it should be free from free-acid and dirt. Coloured CaCl2 material should not be used as it results in corrosion and scaling of the tubes. For the same reason by-product material is not desirable as it contains Organic Chlorides which may break into Hydrogen Chloride./p>
Corrosion in closed systems can be largely overcome by the addition of sodium dichromate, Na2Cr207-2H2O. Enough caustic is added to make the brines slightly alkaline. Open calcium brine systems may be protected by adding zinc dust a little at a time.
Enough caustic is added to make the brines slightly alkaline. The buyer must insist that the brine supplied by the vendor is having a pH of >7
An inhibitor may be added to the brine to prevent corrosion of the equipment.
1 ton brine needs 1.2 kg of Sodium Dichromate in closed brine system. (100 lb. required per 1000 cu.ft. of calcium chloride brine).
1 ton brine needs 0.75 kg of Zinc Dust in open brine system. (60 lb./1000 cu.ft. a little at a time).Other applications include sprinkling to parking lots, dirt roads, driveways and construction sites. Calcium Chloride Brine will control dust. It creates a barrier between ice/snow and the surface, helping to prevent freezing and making snow removal easier. It will save time and money, and is more efficient than other available products. Calcium Chloride brine is also used for making organo-calcium compounds like calcium stearate, calcium octate, calcium naphthenate etc.
The recommended specifications for the Calcium Chloride Brine are
Calcium Chloride solution of specific gravity about 1.3
pH should be >7
Assay of Calcium Chloride as received 30-33%
Dry basis assay of Calcium Chloride >98%Calcium Chloride Refrigeration or Calcium Chloride Brine Grade
A Brine may be defined as liquid of low freezing point used in transmission of refrigeration without change of state. The brines commonly employed in refrigeration are Calcium Chloride CaCl2 and Sodium Chloride. Sodium Chloride is cheaper but cannot be used below minus 15C. CaCl2 of commercial grade can operate satisfactorily up to minus 40C. Use of CaCl2 above 33% should be avoided as it results in crystallization resulting in reduced efficiency. The CaCl2 selected should be adjusted to pH of around 8 and it should be free from free-acid and dirt. Coloured material should not be used as it results in corrosion and scaling of the tubes.
